Cosmic Weariness

Precious Cargo presents Cosmic Weariness, an exhibition by Chicago-based artist Annabelle Dunstan. The show culminates in a selection of paintings and drawings which reflect on residue and the search for understanding in the midst of overwhelm, mystery, and spiritual fatigue. The exhibition coincides with a release of a new zine by the same name.
A fogged and endless exhaustion proves almost hopeful, it’s on the edge of something. Personal mythologies make way for visions of a new world sprouted from the ending of the old one. Action alongside raw emotion crack open fissures where the viewer is now able to look. The image is the portal’s viewfinder.
There is something to be said about energy and what you owe it, when I am home my body remembers. There are bits of sand stuck in my bones, dust made of goat heads from 100 years ago. A cracking piñon shell is like a chorus of angels to me—that is my personal reality. I’m interested in playing in its shadow—we all have this left behind personal residue. I have pretty bad vision but residue is what I see with the most clarity.
Annabelle Dunstan is a baker and artist based in Chicago, Illinois. She received her BFA in printmaking from SAIC in 2022 and has shown work primarily in the Midwest and Southwest, where she is originally from.
Precious Cargo is a slow gallery, distribution project, and small press based in Tucson, Arizona. This exhibition was supported in part by Night Bloom: Grants for Artists, through MOCA Tucson and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
